SNACK

24/5/2018

I know that this is going to cause some issues but unfortunately we have made the decision to stop providing snack in school from the 11th June.
School is currently owed £270 for unpaid snack money.  We can not afford to keep running at a loss.
If you have paid for the year we will be paying you back.
If you want your child to have a snack from next term you can send in a snack from home.
I do need to clarify the policy on healthy snacks.
Generally speaking, if a child has had a nourishing breakfast, a playtime snack should not be necessary if they are having a healthy lunch.
Having a healthy balanced lunch has been credited as a contributing factor in the improvement of pupil’s concentration, attention, energy levels and ultimately high levels of academic achievement.
However, we are aware that some children will eat very little at breakfast time and may benefit from an opportunity to eat a snack at break time.
Fresh Milk is available daily. The government provide free milk in school for all children in Foundation Phase.
The school policy on snacks is to ensure that they should be a healthy option.
The governors have outlined this in our school prospectus: If you would like your child to have a mid-morning snack, we encourage them to bring in fresh fruit or vegetables. Nothing else is allowed under healthy schools guidance.
Chopped up fruit or raw veggies such as carrots or peppers are ideal.
Finally, we do not wish to stop the break time snacks altogether but we do rely on our parents to make the healthy choices for our pupils and to abide by our school policy. Please do not send snacks that are high in fat or sugar.
We can only let the children have snack if it is fruit or veg.  Anything else will not be allowed.
If you would like to discuss this further please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Sports Day 2018

24/5/2018

After a fabulous day full of energy and excitement I am sat in my office, slightly sunburnt, reflecting on Sports Day.
It was a great day for all our athletes to explore and experience being part of a team and learn more about themselves.  They also had the experience of participating in front of a big audience.  Many thanks to all that could make it to support the children.
Many congratulations to our winners.  I am sure they will never forget that positive feeling of getting the sticker or the trophy.  However Sports Day at Maesglas is not just about the winners. It is fundamentally about having fun.
At the forefront of our minds when we are planning the event, are the life-long effects – both positive and negative that these learning experiences can have.  I am sure we can all remember horror stories from our own sports days (I was always last).
All of the events are competitive and while we encourage all the children to participate in these, ultimately they have the right to choose.
It was amazing to see so many of our children this afternoon volunteer to take part in the long distance race.  A real challenge on such a warm day.  The fact that we have such resilient learners who are willing to give it a go is fantastic.
We want all children to enjoy being with their peers, challenging themselves at their own level and have fun being physically active. There are so many lasting memories for me today.  The smiles, excitement, the disappointment, the tears, the cheering but the main one was the great team spirit.  We really are Team Maesglas.
